“Liquid Stone” is a collection addressing the designer’s views on consumerism and industrial evolution. The industrial revolution in 1760 was a pivotal moment in human history and has rapidly shaped the world around us, bringing us to an age of industrial evolution raising questions to whether technological advancement can coexist with the evolution of the natural world.
Prior to 1760, dedicated craftsmen would produce interior products using high levels of skill with the philosophy that they would last a lifetime. After this, quality and longevity were replaced with volume and affordability; this has led to a society on an increasing trajectory of consumption, consumption that our planet may not be able to sustain. The collection uses contemporary material experimentation to tap into this pre-consumerist era and construct products that satisfy a practical use and form an emotional connection to allow these products to once again become relics of the future.
The title “Liquid Stone” is in reference to the main material used in the lamp shades. This material is a mixture of sand, a binding polymer and various other waste materials from the studio, such as bronze dust, steel shavings and steel scale. This mixture starts off as a liquid
